This winter the Institute officially received its 501(c)(3) non-profit status. All donations to the Institute are used to further compelling entertainment projects that produce positive change. The Texas League of Conservation Voters Education Fund has teamed up with the Harmony Institute on a groundbreaking media project aimed at reaching Hispanic youth in West Texas. This pioneering project will raise awareness and reshape attitudes and behaviors in an area facing numerous environmental problems.

The Harmony Institute recently received a grant from the Wolfensohn Family Foundation, an organization concerned with promoting innovative work related to the environment and media. The Institute is proud to be one of their latest recipients of funding.

In April 2009, Eleanor M. Cleverly joined Harmony as the Institute’s full-time Program Coordinator. In addition to supplementing the research staff with a degree in Behavioral Science, Eleanor is currently completing a Master’s degree in Media Studies at the New School University in New York City.

Eleanor has extensive experience in transmedia and web production. She has worked on marketing and design campaigns for companies such as HiT Entertainment and Nokia, and is a regular contributor in the blogosphere, writing on design and technology. She launched a personal site that comments on popular culture and humor in June 2008. Her academic research centers on the impact of web technologies on social and political discourses.

On April 16, the Institute’s Deputy Director Debika Shome was a featured panelist at the Environmental Film Festival, hosted by Yale University and the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. The panel, titled “Changing Environmental Attitudes and Behavior Through Film,” explored how the non-profit, academic, and entertainment sectors are using film as a tool to reshape environmental attitudes and behaviors.

"The Power of Online Storytelling” panel, hosted by the Harmony Institute and the Screenwriters Colony took place on February 5 at The New School in Greenwich Village. Speaking to a sold-out audience, industry leaders from online web entertainment discussed the complex issues related to the creation and dissemination of narrative over this exciting new platform.
