The Institute's work was recently mentioned in the August 2009 edition of the world's foremost scientific journal, Science.

Science summarized the Institute's innovative entertainment technique, "adapted to the YouTube age," by reporting on Harmony's latest "[collaboration] with the creators of popular video programs on the Web to develop scripts that show people conserving energy and water and considering how their consumption choices might affect the planet."

On September 30th, Executive Director John Johnson spoke at the Writers Guild of America West panel on 'Unconscious Bias in Entertainment'. The discussion acquainted WGA members with the science of unconscious bias, addressed how it affects both casting and story lines in mainstream entertainment, and discussed methods that writers can use to bring this issue to the public consciousness.

Program Coordinator Eleanor Cleverly is spear-heading a new campaign designed to raise awareness and promote action in one of the most important media reform and rights issues facing the country. Network neutrality is an issue many Americans are just beginning to understand and explore, and still the open network available through the internet is in constant threat. This new project will target heavy web users through a short animated web show about urban communities and equal access.

Executive Director Johnson, along with Program Coordinator Cleverly, flew West in early September for the 5th Annual Tides Momentum Conference.

The conference offers a compelling network of thought leaders from the world's most well-respected for and non-profit institutions, all of whom are passionate about collaborating on projects that deeply critique the status quo, and offer realizable solutions to pressing problems.
